Written on behalf of Andrea Caish:
Merrick came to the Preparatory Department of Clifton High School in 1950. In those days, boys were only admitted to the first 2 years of the School and so he left in 1952 and went on to Clifton College and thence to New College, Oxford where he obtained a first class degree.
After a few years of different posts his eventual career was as Financial Director of the European Union based in Brussels.
Merrick married twice and had one son and two daughters – all of whom were raised in Britain. Both for the sake of his family and also due to his love of Bristol - and especially of Clifton College - Merrick made regular visits back here. My husband, Henry, was one of his best friends and they met for lunch and for local walks “down Memory Lane”.
Sadly Merrick developed pancreatic cancer and died in Brussels in late November. His funeral was held at a crematorium in Bruges and his ashes will be scattered at sea.
